In most cases, yes. Embalming disinfects and preserves the body and it is required by law in Puerto Rico if the body is to be seen in visitation or vigil 24 hours after death. In the event the family wishes to have the body transported from a U.S. State to Puerto Rico or outside Puerto Rico, then embalming is required.
